DESCRIPTION: Welcome to the only medium in the world in which the writer is not the main storyteller and the story is often not the point: video games! In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how writing a story that is actively played versus passively consumed comes with unique challenges not encountered in other media, what game audiences are looking for that other audiences are not (hint: control), and the unique politics and process of making a game, with particular attention paid to how writers from other media can successfully cross over.
SUNDAY 18TH NOVEMBER 2018, ODEON POINT VILLAGE, DUBLIN, IRELAND
12:45 p.m. – 5:15 p.m. (4.5 hours)
TITLE: Writing for Games. Game Narrative Design and Game Stories: A Deep Dive into Plot, Structure, Character, and Dialogue for Games
DESCRIPTION: Are a cutscene and a cinematic the same thing? What can a PC do that an NPC can’t? Does pacing exist when players can spend hours recoloring their armor? Barks and examinables and codex entries, oh my! In this hands-on workshop, you’ll be introduced to the basic elements of writing for games, with allowances made for differences in platform and audience. By the end of the workshop, you’ll have not only encountered many of the unique caveats and scenarios inherent in writing for games, but created your own personal toolbox for how to attack and conquer them.
